Haiti History:
The island of
Hispaniola
has played host to two separate and
distinct societies that we now know as the nations of Haiti
and the Dominican Republic.
Haiti formally renounced its colonial bond with France in
January 1804, as the result of the only successful
Slave rebellion
in world history. The country's longevity as an
independent nation in the Western Hemisphere is second only
to that of the United States. Over this span of over two
centuries, however, the country has never known a period
free of tyranny, repression, political conflict, racial
animosity, and economic hardship (
1915: U.S. Occupation of Haiti ,
Charlemagne Péralte ).
The chaotic and personalistic nature of Haitian political
culture combined with chronic underdevelopment to provide
fertile ground for a succession of despots, strongmen, and
dictators.

Haitian Population almost
entirely black and mulatto as result of historical origin as
slaveholding agricultural colony of France. Country's
powerful economic and political elite mainly mulatto. Only
ethnic minority the "Arabs"- -Syrian, Lebanese, and
Palestinian immigrants--most of whom worked in export-import
sector.

Haitian Flag:
 The
Haitian Flag
was created by rebel
Jean-Jacques Dessalines
who tore a French Tricolor flag
during the
Slave rebellion
in 1803 and retained the red and blue
pieces. The two parts were stitched together horizontally to
represent the union of blacks and mulattoes in
Haiti. The
arms are composed of a cabbage palm surmounted by the
Phrygian cap of liberty and ornamented with trophies with a
banner across the bottom saying "L'Union Fait La Force"
(Union Makes Strength). A similar flag with vertical black
and red panels was also represented in
Haiti, especially from
1964-86 during the regime of the Duvalier family(
Francois Duvalier
& Jean-Claude
Duvalier).

religion. The majority of Haitians believe in and practice
at least some aspects of
voodoo. Most voodooists believe
that their religion can coexist with Catholicism. Most
Protestants, however, strongly oppose

Haitian Creole:
Haitian Creole
emerged mainly in the context of French colonization around
the seventeenth century when millions of Africans were
captured in Africa and transported to the Americas to work
as slaves on Caribbean plantations.
The
Haitian Creole is spoken by all Haitians. Conflicting
political interests however, have caused Haiti's national
language policy to be inconsistent.
