Obin:
Philome
Obin was a master in Haitian
art.
Obin was a
Self-taught painter who focused mainly on describing scenes from the
Haitian
Revolution and of every day life in
Cap-Haitian. His work is representative of
the spirit of the 1920s and 1930s when the global negritude movement would see a
local manifestation in Haiti with the Indigenist movement.

In 1940, Dewitt Peters, an Americican
school teacher arrived in Haiti and was stricken by the artistic talent
displayed by many untrained and in many cases uneducated painters that he would
meet.
He founded the
Centre
D'Art that eventually became the champion of the "naive Art" form in
Haiti. No one could have predicted that the
Centre
D'Art would serve as a catalyst for such an incredible explosion of
the Haitian creative spirit. These paintings are characterized by vivid, raw
colors, revealed spontaneity, freedom of expression and freshness. With the
arrival of the co-director of the
Centre
D'Art, Selden
Rodman, this art form was able to attain international notoriety.

Voodoo Influence in Haitian Art:
When enslaved Africans were
brought to the Caribbean in the seventeenth century, they also brought
with them their tradition and religion from west and central Africa. They were
in turn exposed to a variety of European traditions, including the ritual
practices of Roman Catholicism. A fusion of African religious
beliefs,
Voodoo evolved in Haiti through generations of slaves, and borrows
heavily from imagery brought to Haiti by Catholic missionaries.
More than just a
religion,
Voodoo in Haiti is a way of live which has inspired Haitian artists in
many different ways.

Sequin
Artists of Haiti:
 The
Sequined tapestry is a complex process. Constructed of sequins and beads
hand-sewn onto fabric. With a steady rhythm, the
Sequined artist thread thousands
of beads and sequins. The artist needs to know
Voodoo iconography and the colors
associated with the lwa (voodoo spirits). Each work requires between 19,000 to
22,000 sequins and beads, and can take anywhere from 12 days to 15 days

 Andre Pierre, born in
Port au
Prince
in 1914, is considered one of Haiti's greatest painters.He is the artistic and spiritual heir of Hector Hyppolite. Born into a
rural agricultural family, he decided one day in his youth to devote his life to
Voodoo. He is a
Houngan, or
Voudou
Priest, and a religious painter; his art
documents the
Haitian Religion.
